ermm....you can try adjust the aperture and shuttle speed of the setting when taking objects in dark surrounding. Summore increase ISO when taking night object, ISO 200 or 400 when taking pictures during daytime. Try not to use flash that often except when the lighting is really really low.
Use macro shot when taking close-up pictures like food, flower, etc, with or without flash depending on the lightings. I prefer to use the natural lighting of the sun but when night time comes, I usually use the surrounding lighting and adjust to higher ISO and slower shuttle speed and no flash. That way, I noticed, the object will have more natural colour.
You are doing good but still need a lot of practice and play more with the settings. You'll be good in no time.
